What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a group of chronic conditions that effect body movement and muscle control.  CP is caused by damage to the brain during fetal development, birth, or infancy.  Although it is not a curable condition, symptoms do not increase over time, and often, training and therapy can greatly improve daily function and enhance quality of lifestyle.

There is no single cause for CP, but rather it is several disorders that are grouped together because of the similarities of their symptoms.  These include muscle tightness or spasticity, involuntary movement, difficulty related to mobility, or problems with communication.

People with Cerebral Palsy don't all have the same disabilities, they can range from slight to severe and effect different areas of the body.

Does United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) only serve individuals with Cerebral Palsy?  

No, UCP serves ALL children and adults with various developmnetal disabilities in SLO County. 

What is a developmental disability?

A developmental disability is a permanent disability which is diagnosed before the individual is 18 years of age.  Individuals may have a mental or physical disability, or a combination.  Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are some examples of developmental disabilities.
